Dr. Bill Rivers
Principal, WP Rivers & Associates

FOREST HILL, MARYLAND - The Association of Language Companies (ALC), the nation’s largest trade association of language service companies (LSC) has successfully retained the services of Dr. Bill Rivers as the ALC’s first industry association lobbyist. Previously the ALC has never undertaken advocacy, yet, the board of directors met and decided that the ALC must advocate for its members. In order to do so, the association engaged with Dr. Rivers to fill this role. His stellar reputation in supporting the language industry made him the obvious choice. Dr. Rivers is the Principal of WP Rivers & Associates and has vast experience in advocacy for the language industry at both the Federal and State levels. Dr. Rivers brings over 31-years of experience as a freelancer, researcher, professor, Chief Technical Officer, Intelligence Community leader in languages, and chair of national and international standards committees for the language industry.

Dr. Rivers has worked with the ALC lobbying Congress and assisting at the State level, on numerous occasions. Most recently, with the support of the ALC, Dr. Rivers assisted CoPTIC in advocating for California’s AB 2257, which helps to fix the employee classification issue for professional linguists. With Dr. Rivers’ expert assistance, the ALC will be able to develop comprehensive policy positions and messaging on key issues for the language industry. He will act to execute detailed, innovative legislative strategies for the ALC, as well as train and coach ALC members to advocate for our common interests. Our efforts will raise the language industry profile in Washington, D.C. with Dr. Rivers joining the ALC team. The ALC will build on the vision of founding members such as Bill Graeper, to improve our value-added platform for sharing lessons learned and resources on vital issues for the language industry.

“Dr. Rivers was a clear choice for the ALC Board of Directors. Because of his lifelong dedication to language advocacy, as well as his receiving the Bill Graeper Lifetime Award, the board easily and quickly selected him. Ongoing state and federal legislation commanded a director with Bill’s achievements. We, on the board, determined the qualifications needed for our industry’s progress matched Dr. Bill Rivers’ experience and expertise!”
Susan Amarino, Vice President, ALC

To date, through the generosity of a first round of fund raising by ALC companies, the association has raised nearly $100,000 in support of advocacy. Even though the association has made great initial progress, there is still a long way to go. The ALC seeks further funding to guarantee its members that their best interests will be represented in Congress. No longer will the ALC remain on the sidelines of the political stage with so many members needing Dr. Rivers advocacy and leadership. As a trade association, the board believes that it’s the responsibility of the ALC to represent the industry to the rest of the world. The ALC is focused on increasing visibility and positions itself as the voice of the industry in the United States.

“Bill Rivers is the most experienced person on the planet when it comes to lobbying for our industry. We are lucky to now have Bill solely focused on the needs of the ALC – that made the decision to invest an easy one to make.”
Scott Klein, CEO, Language Line Solutions
