ALC is Bringing Members Together During COVID-19

Language Service Companies across the globe are feeling the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The U.S. federal government has instituted Laws and Executive Orders to protect citizens from the effects of this disease and limitations have significantly curtailed the way business is conducted. Handshakes and face-to-face interactions have become almost nonexistent, forcing people to find alternative ways of interacting.
The ALC family is not isolated in these challenges and the impact has been extensive for our membership base; 90 percent of ALC members reported that they are struggling due to the disruption this pandemic is having on their businesses.
During these challenging times, the Association of Language Companies is providing its members with valuable online resources ensuring collaboration and communication with other members is still a viable option.
Introducing ALC Virtual Roundtables
On April 2, 2020 ALC hosted its first ALC Virtual Roundtable via Zoom. This Roundtable “State of Interpreting During the Pandemic” played host to more than 20 ALC Members and 6 ALC Board Members. This virtual open discussion allowed each individual the opportunity to converse about areas of the pandemic that are directly affecting their business and ways to help control the aftermath.

A large portion of the ALC Virtual Roundtable was spent collaborating between members on how best to utilize the Paycheck Protection Program, also known as PPP. The Paycheck Protection Program authorized up to $349 billion in forgivable loans to small businesses to pay their employees during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) crisis. This loan covered payrolls costs, and most mortgage interest, rent, and utility costs. You can find more information regarding the Paycheck Protection Program here.
Many questions asked during the Virtual Roundtable surrounding the PPP included:
“Can we include 1099 workers in our application?”
“I let someone go March 20 whom I don’t want to rehire. Does that mean I can’t have the loan forgiven?”
“The PPP loan requires that we rehire staff no later than June 30th correct?”
“How are businesses finding qualified lenders who are authorized to help with the PPP?”
With each question asked, a true comradery and industry support was abundant during this 1-hour discussion. Many key take-aways for members included:
“The amount of critical information shared to the group.”
“Clarity on the PPP.”
“A consensus of concerns.”
“How much our members want to see each other.”
Future Participation in the Virtual Roundtable Series
Thank you to all who joined ALC for the first Virtual Roundtable and all who have expressed interest in joining one in the future. ALC is committed to providing its members with timely information and resources ensuring the LSC community is equipped to combat difficult situations and provide a support system for collaborative discussion making. Moving forward, ALC will be providing additional Virtual Roundtables and online social opportunities to allow ALC members to connect with other community leaders. Each roundtable is limited to 20 members, to provide all participants the opportunity to join the discussion and collaborate on the topic.
