Computer-aided Translation (CAT)—a form of language translation in which a translator uses computer software to support and facilitate the translation process.
Globalization—the process of international integration arising from the interchange of world views, products, ideas, and other aspects of culture.
Internationalization—similar to localization, internationalization is the adaption of products for use virtually everywhere, while localization is the addition of special features for use in a specific location or region.
Interpreting—oral or sign transfer of spoken message from one language into another.
Interpreter—a skilled individual who transfers a thought or expression from a source language into an expression with a comparable meaning in a target language. An interpreter's objective is to convey every semantic element as well as tone and register and every intention and feeling of the message.
Language Services— a range of professional skills involving multilingual communication such as translation (of written word), localization, interpreting (of spoken word), instruction, (of foreign language), and testing (of language proficiency and performance).
Language Service Company—a firm or agency that provides language services to its clients as required and often on demand. Clients may need translation, interpreting, localization, instruction, or testing. These are professional services that typically require the work of multiple and multilingual translators, interpreters, database designers, desktop publishers, computer programmers, instructors, and tester/raters.
Localization—the process of translating a product into different languages or adapting a product for a specific country or region while ensuring that it is culturally appropriate for the target audience. To accomplish this the language service company will pay particular attention to the choice of symbols, colors, currency, and time formats.
Machine Translation (MT)—using software to translate text or speech from one language to another.
Translation—transfer of a written document from the source language into the target language(s).
