What Is Foreign Accent Syndrome?

It sounds like something from a medical TV drama like “Grey’s Anatomy,” but last week a story began trending about a teenage native English speaker who woke up from a coma with a new ability to speak Spanish fluently.

The teenager, Rueben Nsemoh, is from Atlanta and suffered a concussion on Sept. 24 while playing soccer, which led to the coma. Prior to the concussion, Nsemoh only knew a few basic Spanish words and phrases. After the concussion and coma, he struggled with English.
